John –
I’ve smoked the Original and the Pasión, but the Reserva is in a league of its own. This is for the smoker who wants maximum flavor and body without sacrificing refinement.
The first thing you notice is the wrapper—a toothy, jet-black San Andrés Oscuro leaf that is incredibly oily. It’s a stunning-looking cigar. The pre-light aroma was heavy with dark cocoa and barnyard earth, promising a deep, resonant smoke.
Upon lighting, the strength is immediate but controlled. There’s a massive wave of dark chocolate and black espresso, followed by a spicy, red-pepper kick that lingers on the retrohale. It’s a bold start, but the aging of the Nicaraguan fillers keeps it from feeling ‘young’ or harsh.
By the halfway point, the profile gets even richer. I picked up notes of charred oak, black licorice, and a meaty, savory quality that reminded me of a fine steak. The construction was bulletproof; a firm, slow burn that resulted in a dense, white ash that didn’t budge.
The final third is where the ‘Reserva’ really earns its name. The flavors intensify into a heavy, syrupy sweetness—almost like a high-proof rum—balanced by a deep, earthy finish. It’s a full-bodied masterpiece that leaves a lasting impression.
This isn’t a morning cigar. This is a ‘celebration’ smoke—the kind you save for a quiet Friday night with a heavy pour of cask-strength rye or a dark stout. If you want the peak of the La Aroma de Cuba line, this is it.”
