Description

La Flor Dominicana Cameroon Cabinets

The wedge-shaped head that makes the Chisel unique comes from the busy mind of Litto Gomez (see interview page 149), the cigarmaker behind the La Flor Dominicana brand. He was inspired to make the shape while chomping on a torpedo one day during his drive to work in the Dominican Republic. After a while, he found himself enamored with the new, flattened head that his jaws had created, and he instructed one of his top rollers to recreate the size. Gomez now has Chisels in a variety of forms, and a number of rollers who can make the unusual cigar with ease. The La Flor Dominicana Cameroon Cabinet Chisel brings a new flavor to the traditionally robust Chisel blend, showering the palate with notes of spices and nuts with a bit of leather and a sweet nougat finish.

    The Aesthetic
A departure from the ornate bands of many LFD lines, the Cameroon Cabinet often arrives “naked” or with minimal branding, letting the leaf speak for itself. The wrapper is a genuine 4-year-aged African Cameroon—thin, fragile, and rustic with a reddish-brown hue. It’s oily to the eye but slightly delicate to the touch, so handle it with care.
    The Cold Draw
The aroma off the foot is heavy on cedar and sweet hay. Once clipped, the cold draw offers a surprising mix of milk chocolate sweetness and a faint, dry woodiness.
    The Smoking Experience
    The First Third
Unlike some Cameroon cigars that start out very mild, this is unmistakably an LFD. It opens with a punchy black pepper kick and a distinct “toasty” quality. As the initial spice settles, you get a beautiful balance of cedar and a roasted nuttiness that sits right at the front of the palate.
    The Second Third
This is where the Cameroon wrapper shines. A natural, nougat-like sweetness develops, rounding out the robust Dominican and Nicaraguan fillers. The profile becomes incredibly complex—think baking spices, leather, and a hint of caramel. The body is firmly medium-full, but the smoke remains smooth and creamy.
    The Final Third
The strength ramps up toward the end, a signature of Litto Gomez’s blending style. The sweetness takes a backseat to more savory notes of charred oak and dark espresso. It finishes bold and warm without becoming harsh, leaving a long, spicy afterglow.
    The Verdict
The LFD Cameroon Cabinet is a “connoisseur’s Cameroon.” It takes a wrapper traditionally known for being mellow and sweet and marries it to a powerful, ligero-heavy blend. It’s refined enough for a long afternoon but has enough backbone to satisfy someone looking for a full-bodied experience.
Final Note: Because of the thinness of the aged Cameroon leaf, avoid over-puffing, which can lead to bitterness or wrapper cracks. Take your time with this one. It pairs exceptionally well with a double espresso or a smooth Highland Scotch.
