A Modern Classic with Remarkable Depth
I’ve been smoking for years, and the Montecristo 1935 Anniversary Nicaragua is, without a doubt, one of the most sophisticated releases to come out of the AJ Fernandez/Montecristo collaboration. This isn’t just a cigar; it’s a masterclass in balance.
The Experience
Appearance: Right out of the box, the presentation is impeccable. The Nicaraguan wrapper is oily, rich, and has that perfect “chocolate bar” look. The construction is solid with a pristine cap.
The Draw & Burn: I had zero issues here. The draw is effortless—just the right amount of resistance—and it burns razor-sharp from start to finish. It’s clear they used high-quality leaves that were properly aged.
Flavor Profile: This is where the cigar shines. It opens with a sophisticated spice that is prominent but never harsh. As you move into the middle, you get these deep, earthy notes mixed with a distinct creamy cocoa and subtle toasted almond. It’s full-bodied, but the finish is incredibly smooth and lingers just long enough to make you reach for another puff.
Complexity: What I love about the 1935 Anniversary is that it evolves. It starts bold and assertive, but by the final third, it softens into a rich, complex sweetness that feels very high-end.
Final Verdict
If you are looking for something to celebrate a milestone or just want a premier smoking experience, this is the one. It demands a bit of your time and pairs beautifully with a glass of dark rum or a peaty scotch. It’s a bold departure from the standard Montecristo profile, but it honors the heritage while bringing a modern, punchy Nicaraguan twist to the table.
Highly recommended. It’s firmly in my “must-have” rotation for special occasions.
