San Lotano Requiem Maduro – The Dark Knight of the Humidor
If you’re a fan of dark, oily wrappers and a profile that hits like a rich dessert, the San Lotano Requiem Maduro is probably going to become your new daily obsession. AJ Fernandez really leaned into the fermentation process with this one, and it shows from the second you slide it out of the cellophane.
The star here is the Mexican San Andrés Maduro wrapper. It’s thick, rugged, and has a beautiful matte-black finish. Right from the cold draw, you get a hint of what’s coming: a deep, natural sweetness. Once lit, the room note is incredible—heavy and aromatic. You get hit with immediate flavors of dark baker’s chocolate, espresso, and a distinct black cherry sweetness on the finish.
What I love most is that despite being a Maduro, it isn’t a “gut-punch” of strength. It’s a solid medium-to-full body, but it’s so smooth and creamy that you can smoke it right down to the nub without any of that bitter “tarry” taste that cheaper Maduros get.
Why This is the Ultimate After-Dinner Smoke:
The San Andrés Magic: That Mexican wrapper provides an earthy, chocolatey base that you just can’t get from any other leaf.
Complex Sweetness: It’s not a “sweet” cigar in the infused sense, but the natural sugars in the fermented leaf give it a rich, molasses-like character.
Perfect Box-Press: The soft box-press feels incredibly comfortable in the hand and ensures a cool, slow burn that lets the flavors develop perfectly.
The “Whiskey Companion”: This is the cigar you reach for when you’re pouring a heavy, peaty Scotch or a sweet Bourbon. It stands up to the alcohol and complements the charred oak notes perfectly.
If you like your cigars dark, rich, and loaded with chocolate and coffee notes, the Requiem Maduro is a masterpiece. It’s consistent, bold, and feels way more expensive than it actually is.
